Chilly Gonzales – what a genius, involved, as the folks say, in ‘some next level shit’.
Over the past ten or so years he’s given us hip hop with insane lyrical brilliance, delicate solo piano works, lovely downtempo stuff, work with another fave of mine Peaches and live shows par excellence.
At the moment I’m listening to his contribution to 2008: ‘Soft Power’ – a semi-tribute to the soft rock of the late 70s \ early 80s which, given my established musical taste (and, let me tell you, MOR don’t feature AT ALL) should be anathema to me. But it’s done with such elegance and love and lightness of touch, it was one of my most listened-to albums of 2008.
Aaaanyway, Chilly’s coming back to London, and it’s not just for a show. He’s doing is a weekly residency at London’s Pigalle Club.
Watching Gonzales alternate with alarming dexterity between the ridiculous and the heart breaking, the major to the minor, sums up his character and music perfectly. He is able to translate this conflict on stage and the Gonzales live experience would put most to shame; it has passion, comedy, melancholy, 5 costume changes… This man is serious about entertaining. Everyone.
